I bought my first RC helicopter in 1986 It was a Hirobo Shuttle. Just to show you how inexperienced I was I got everything I needed………..except for a gyro. I could never control it and ended up giving it away to Good will and finding it years later in a pawn shop. I could tell it was mine because it had a badly painted Arizona state Flag painted on the side of the canopy.

Back in the 90s we did this all the time – we called it "doing the funky chicken". I had a Concept 30 IC powered heli throw the radio battery out on impact leaving the throttle on almost full bore. It took quite a few minutes for the clutch to finally burn out and allow me to go pull the fuel line off.
