RC Helicopter Beginner 5 months on with Gaui Hurricane 550
This is where I’m at on my journey of learning to fly an RC helicopter. I started nearly 5 months ago with no previous RC experience. I have logged 300 flights since then – the Hurricane 550 is quiet enough to practice hover in the back yard. Practising frequently is the key to progressing in this hobby. If you leave it too long between flights you find yourself having to put a lot of work in just to get back to were you left off instead of progressing. Conqueoring nose-in has been a major hurdle but the rewards make the effort worth while. I can now fly the heli around in circles in front of me comfortably. This is a great Hobby – packed with adrenalin & challenges! I love my Hurricane, it’s a fantastic heli to learn on.
Video Rating: 4 / 5
Thanks for this video. I went onto HobbyKing and ordered one as a result. (currently putting in lots of hours on RealFlight)
Did you paint the tops of the blades to help with bank orientation? Whether you did it for that reason or not, I will do it too, as I think it would definitely help.
Very impressed with you flying ,. i’ve been told to stay away from the smaller heli’s like the t-rex purely because of the stabillity, i’ve been told to get something bigger like the hurricane 550……what’s your opinion on the subject.
I know here in brisbane the importer taiwa sell them, but just wondering if you have had any problems getting spare parts,i’m just worried if i get a hurricane that they may stop importing guai products.
Finally can you give me a run down of your setup.
@CABINETMAKERJOHNY
Yes I crashed numerous times! I pushed the boundaries plenty of times and paid the price! Thats one of the reasons I love this heli – the repair costs don’t break the bank.
The sim is a great place to try new orientations and manouvers but at some point you have to try it for real. Keep up the good work fellars, progress really only comes down to flyer often. I flew a couple of packs every afternoon while learning, mostly in my backyard early on.
Happy flying!
Hi, i to am a newbie to any kind of RC myself and am impressed with your heli control skills they are very good considering you’ve only been flying for 5 months. Tell me, did you ever crash and if so how many times. I’ve been learning for about 3 months now and am starting to get some enjoyment now. Keep up the great flying!
I just posted my first four flights on this same heli…no where near as good as you…got the hovering down pretty good…working on 45 and 90 degree hovering…after that will move it a foot or two right, then left, then back and forth (figure eights) Going to try flying more packs as I have only been doing one pack when I fly…I think I will make faster progress if I fly several
Nice flying, looks like you have really good control. I skipped the basics with my sim and now I’m really battling to progress.
this or 500trex
very nice flying there buddy!!
wow you have great control!
seanlee74, no fancy stabilisers on my heli Mate! That is how stable the Hurricane 550 is. Fantastic heli to fly.
Are you using heli command or some electric stabiliser?
Very accomplished flying, well done after 5 months thats amazing, keep it up
Lovely smooth flying. Is the big Gaui really that stable? My 200 is like a wild thing!
Thanks guys, yes the tail is belt driven, and there actually was more space than it looks!
You have some Big Nutzzz hovering and doing circles and 8’s in low hanging trees. Nice flying though.
nice flying is that belt driven
hey man thats some nice flying,
Thanks for the kind comments guys, it is realy satisfying flying once you master the basics. Happy Flying 🙂
I’ve watched many RC Heli flying videos but this has got to be one of my favourites and deserves 5 stars. The turns are nice, smooth and well coordinated. All this in five months is well impressive. This video has inspired me.
That was very very smooth flight I enjoyed the video a lot 5 stars
Im guessing you sim alot? Nice job!
i have never flown a heli but i can tell you are really good! nice
Very Nice for only 5 months =) very good hovering/circuits/nose-in =)
you must have flown around twice a day for 5 months!
very nice .. this reminds me of working out and proper form.. you see people lifting weights waaay too heavy for them so they jerk and throw it around to look good.. instead of using lower weights and proper form.. you are using proper form and have complete control and understanding of the dynamics.. very good progress.. this is the way to learn..
